Berrios Family

Moody Students

Josh Somsel

Church Planting: We are so blessed to be partnering with Gerson and Mayra Berrios, the pastor and his wife of La Iglesia de Cristo Victorioso (the Spanish-speaking church plant on Market Street). They have three dear children, Gerson Jr., Richie and Cassie.

Special Events: We had five students from Moody Bible Institute visit Wichita. They learned about church planting among the urban poor. The students also partnered with Lighthouse Community Church to do evangelism in Oaklawn. It was great to have them with us.

New Staff: Josh Somsel worked with us last summer and has now joined us for a six month internship and is applying to become a missionary with World Impact. Josh’s role will be both working in maintenance and developing programs for the youth of our church plants.

Pray Requests: Strategic Planning, Missionary Support, New Location for Christ the Victor Church.

Get Involved: Our Food Pantry is almost empty. Find out what we need to restock it and various other items we need for our hospitality ministry and church planting.

Church Planting: After studying the Proverbs 31 woman at Cristo Victorioso, the women put to work what they learned by making pupusas, a thick handmade tortilla filled with meat, peppers and cheese. This is a great example of sharing life together that we strive to foster in church plants.

40th Anniversary
40th AnniversaryPictured: Staff, board members and friends of World Impact in the 70s and 80s.On February 19th we celebrated 40 years of ministry in the Wichita area.  Current and former staff, board members and friends gathered to recognize God’s blessing over all these years On February 19th we celebrated 40 years of ministry in the Wichita area.  Current and former staff, board members and friends gathered to recognize God’s blessing over all these years. In 1965, Dr. Keith Phillips began teaching Bible clubs in Watts, in the inner city of Los Angeles. He soon realized that the needs and opportunities were far greater than one person could handle, so in the late 1960′s he recruited hundreds of college students from BIOLA, Azusa Pacific, and other area schools and began a Bible club program for children in the housing projects in Watts.  In 1969, Dr. Roy Just of Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas invited Keith to be Tabor’s commencement speaker.  In the following year, fifty students began driving to Wichita every Saturday morning to begin Bible clubs in the inner city of Wichita.World Impact was officially incorporated in 1971.  Full-time missionaries moved into the inner city in Los Angeles, and in 1972 our first full-time staff in Wichita moved in.  Al Ewert was one of those young people; he has faithfully served the ministry since that time and is now our Midwest Regional Vice-President.World Impact eventually expanded to other cities: Newark, San Diego, Fresno, Chester (PA), Oakland, San Francisco and Dallas.  We also added camps: The Oaks, in Southern California; Harmony Heart, in Pennsylvania; Deer Creek, near Denver; and Morning Star Ranch, in Kansas, which is also the home of our young men’s Christian Leadership Training Program.  The ministry itself has expanded from our initial children’s and teens’ Bible clubs to include our overall vision of church planting, as well as theological training through The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI), Christian schools, health ministries, thrift stores, job training and sports ministries in various cities. This year we celebrate not only forty years of World Impact’s national ministry and Wichita’s ministry, but also thirty years since the beginning of Morning Star Ranch and twenty five years of The Good Samaritan Clinic.  In the fall of this year we will have a larger community gathering to celebrate the Lord’s goodness in our work..In 1965, Dr. Keith Phillips began teaching Bible clubs in Watts, in the inner city of Los Angeles. November, 2010 Youth Horizons Volunteer Opportunities

Phone Calls (Nov 16-20)
Mailer (Nov 16-20)

We need individual(s) that can help put together a 250 piece mailer. This can be assembled at the office or you can pick it up and drop it off. This usually takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete with 1-2 people. Please contact april@youthhorizons.net or 262-8293 for more information.

If you like to talk on the phone, Youth Horizons would LOVE your help! The Annual Campaign and Holiday Gala are right around the corner and any added follow up would be wonderful. This is quite a task and a few hands can help significantly in reaching more people!

If you are available the week of Nov 16-20, you can call from the YH Office between 5-7:00pm or we can arrange a specific list that you can call on your own time. Please contact april@youthhorizons.net or 262-8293 for more details.

Holiday Gala (Sunday, Dec 6th) – Kitchen Crew (8)

We are looking for 10 individuals that can assist as kitchen support during the Holiday Gala. This could include washing dishes, making tea, filling drink containers, etc.

Need to be at the facility by 4:30pm.

Baking for Gala (Saturday, Dec 5th)

We are looking for some individuals that can commit to providing Christmas goodies for this lively event. To meet the theme of the party, we’d like all goodies to be traditional Christmas dessert items such as Fudges or Candies (no cookies). We need a total of 25 dozen. Items will need to be delivered in disposable containers to the Youth Horizons offices by 12 noon on Saturday, December 5th.

Decorations for Gala

We are looking for some large nutcrackers (wooden or inflatable) that we could use for decorations at the Gala Event. These can be dropped off prior to the event by December 5th at YH Offices, or could be delivered the afternoon of the event (Sunday, December 6th) to the location.

To inquire or assist with any of the above mentioned items, please contact April at 316-262-8293 or april@youthhorizons.net.
